Salivary gland swelling

cadlard Mar 25, 2011 02:56 AM

Hi Dr. Tobin,

We have taken our German Shepherd dog, aged 11, to two vets now because he has a large swelling under his right jaw. The first one said it was an ear infection and the second one said it was a salivary gland blockage/damage. He anaesthetised the dog, checked his ears, which were fine, checked his teeth, also fine, and said he was in good general health. But told us that it was almost impossible to find what is causing the problem and didn't recommend the removal of the salivary gland as the operation is difficult and our dog is old. He gave us two courses of antibiotics.

Our dog doesn't seem to be in any pain and is happy for us to handle his neck and is otherwise acting normally. But the swelling is very large and fluctuates up and down. What can we do to help him? Is there any way to massage the salivary duct or gland to bring down the swelling. Would hot compresses help? We are making his food moist and cutting up his meat but are wondering what the future holds for our very much loved dog and surely his neck being so swollen long term is eventually going to be very uncomfortable for him. Any ideas on what we can do?

I appreciate being able to ask you via this forum,
Chris.

Apparently the salivary gland is functioning, but the salivary duct is blocked. Since this may be due either to damage to the duct, swelling of the duct and closing down of the opening, or something blocking the duct, there are several things you might try. Warm compresses relax the muscles in the area, including those which line the duct, which might widen the duct, allowing anything blocking to pass, and at least letting the accumulated saliva pass. Two homeopathic remedies which are worth trying are Kali nitricum and Thiosinaminum. If nothing else works, your vet can drain the gland with a needle and syringe to remove the accumulation of saliva, which will bring down the swelling and relieve discomfort.

I really appreciate you taking the time to help me Dr. Tobin and will try what you suggest. Are these homeopathic remedies available for me to buy on the net? I'm not sure that they are available for dogs in Australia.
Regards,
Chris.

These are not what are called polycrests, which are usually available at most health food stores, but should be available from any homeopathic pharmacy or supplier.
