Swiffer Problem?

nile Apr 22, 2011 02:18 PM

I have been told that one or more chemicals contained in the wet Swiffer pads can trigger seizures in dogs and has been fatal to birds.

Anyone heard about this besides me? I will check on their website but I doubt there will be any cautionary information about it there.

Sam,

It is an "urban legend"... go to Snopes.com and search 'swiffer'.

I don't have any confidence in anything SNOPES has to say. They have no oversight that I know of and I don't know what qualifies them to decide what is true and what is not.

I've used the product for a long time and never had any problems.

The affected breeds I know of were all herding dogs. I have heard that they are prone to seizures but am not sure to what extent. I have known several owners and breeders of herding dogs (McNabbs, Colllies, Shelties) who have had epilepsy problems.

Sam,

I've used Swiffer for quite a while with no problems. The only precaution I take (with all cleaning products, actually) is to make sure the dogs do not enter the room while the floor is wet...primarily to make sure they don't get the floor dirty again, but also to keep them from absorbing anything through their paws.

Sue - I do that too. I heard about this from a friend with a sick sheltie - the veterinarian they consulted told him about it. So I think there may be some truth to it. We should all take precautions with household chemicals anyway IMO.

Just thought it would be useful to pass on the info.

I had the problem of Swiffer looking smeared where the dogs slid across when they were making a mad dash for the door. I started using a mixture of vinegar and water. Now they look great...until the dogs go out and stomp through the mud, come in and walk across the floors.
I have heard some brands of fabric softner sheets are harmful to some breeds, but that's probably an urban legend too.

Winona - Smoke usually means fire. Chemicals can/may cause problems. IMO the vinegar or 2:1 peroxide:water solution is a lot safer and cheaper too. Why take a chance?
