water pump question

mbmcewen Oct 11, 2003 01:42 PM

I have a rena inline pump for the creek, but I didn't think about putting a filter in the line unitl it was buried under rock and substrate....if a small piece of coco or peat gets sucked through wil it damage it? Not that there is anything I can do at this point.

Thanks,
Matt

It would have been best if you had used a false bottom and placed the pump down under the egg crate (or whatever is used for the false bottom). I have done several tanks like this and none of my pumps have failed *yet*. Most of them have been running 24/7 for over a year.

I have a false bottom, screen, and about 3 inches of river rock, with the in-tube going through the eggcrate and resting on the bottom....but there has been some settling...shake I guess you could call it that has made its way to the bottom. I will just hope for the best.

Thanks again

Gravel is a good filter also. I have one of my pumps in a small glad container with screen around the hole I put in it. This has been running 12 hours a day for about 8-9 months. My other pump is just in gravel and running well also and has been going for a couple months.
