Blue Jean Pumilio Qs

shopaholic Oct 11, 2003 03:06 PM

Hi gang:

well, doing more new research on Pumilios. I know the Frog world seems to have a lot of waiting lists on them, I was wondering how this came to be. For a few prelim Qs:

1. How much more difficult are they from Imitators? And what specific difficulties do people run into?

2. babies from One set of parents are considered same bloodline so they should not be bred together, correct?

3. If say, one had a couple of kids from one parent set and wanted to make an eventual set of breeding pair, how does one go about doing this? Buying a Juvi and waiting for it to grow up, asking around for a trade, whats the best way? Whats the likelihood of finding a mate for a near adult Pumilio?

4. Is there any care, breeding difference between Blue Jean Pumilio from other pumilios?

5. about how much would a CB first gen. non-sexed one year old Blue Jean Pumilio run?

6. What does Patrick mean when he says to acquire pedigree info?

thank you for educating me again,

Maggie

1. How much more difficult are they from Imitators? And what specific difficulties do people run into?

Not at all difficult. I actually have more trouble breeding imitator. Pumilio are just not fast producers, since they put more energy and time into a single offspring.

2. babies from One set of parents are considered same bloodline so they should not be bred together, correct?

Not neccessarily true. Defects don't start showing until extensive inbreeding has been done, like F9 & F10 generations of continuous line breeding. F1, F2 and even F3 are a pretty safe bet. In other words, its o.k. to breed the siblings, especially if they are the offspring of a WC pair.

Trade them off, or just outright buy some juvis from someone and grow them out. It will be really hard to buy an adult pumilio.

4. Is there any care, breeding difference between Blue Jean Pumilio from other pumilios?

not that I can tell. Blue jeans are a little more reluctant to care for their tads though. The hobby has seen more success out of other morphs.

5. about how much would a CB first gen. non-sexed one year old Blue Jean Pumilio run?

at the very least, $125

6. What does Patrick mean when he says to acquire pedigree info?

For a couple reasons. One, so that you don't have extensive inbreeding going on. Two, so that you can keep bloodlines clean. You wouldn't want to mix a green pumilio with a red one, right? Unless you're trying to design a "X-mas" morph, J/K. So, you wouldn't want to breed a Panama blue jeans pumilio with a Nicaragua blue jeans pumilio. Its always a good idea to know the pedigree and background of your frogs.

As far as breeding the blue jeans, they seem to be more difficult than other pumilio's. They used to be plentiful in the hobby a couple of years ago, and most were wild caught. blue jeans are not available as much because they are very slow breedes. I suggest breeding green pumilio's, because these seem to breed the easiest in my opinion. Pumilio's in general are easy to care for. and they are expensive. if you want an unsexed one they start at 125. They are wonderful frogs, and very vocal. I hear them competing with my leucomelas in the different viv. they get just as loud. good luck finding and breeding blue jeans, they will be fun and well worth it if you get it to work.
