Update - SICK SNAKE! PLEASE HELP!

msalem Oct 11, 2003 03:09 PM

The results of the fecal exam finally came in:
Mouse Parasite 1
Strongyles 1
I am still waiting for the vet to call me back to schedule an appointment. Has anyone heard or had these parasites? What treatment did you use to cure them? How did she catch them? I would appreciate any and as much information.
Thank you,
Mohamed

Is the "1" part something you added to indicate positive?

One of my snakes had Strongyloides and my vet had me give her a series of Panacure doses. I've not heard of Mouse Parasite.

I have heard little about symptoms a little like yours with tape worms and I’ve heard that tape worms can be hard to diagnose because they don’t always pass eggs. You can use Droncit to get rid of them.

I’ve read that pretty much 100% of wild caught ball pythons have parasites. I’m not sure how common they are in captive bred animals or where they might get them from. Presumably being housed with an untreated wild caught can spread it but maybe they can also get it from captive bred feeder rodents.

Rodent parasites usually refer to the pinworm, and tape worm that they carry from unclean living conditions in a breeding tank (laying and burrowing in feces)
even fuzzies can have these nasties as I recall
I will have to look up the reference though

Yes I just put the "1" there to indicate positive. I have the vet appointment later today and will be more than glad to post the treatment the vet administers.

...mouse parasites sometimes pass right through the snake and will appear in a fecal exam...
...strongyles/strongyloides can be treated with Panacur &/or ivermectin. Panacur has a wide margin of safety and a good first dose (50 mg/kg minimum) followed by a second is usually sufficient. Scott J. Michaels DVM
