Genet Experience

adventureman Jun 24, 2007 05:17 PM

Hi all. I have recently discovered the amazing animal the Spotted Genet. I was wondering if there is anyone here who has any experience with them who could provide me with some advice.

I have done some research about down here in South Florida and it appears to be a Class III animal so to be "legal" you just have to get a fee-free permit. Is that what others found? Also, is the 6x6x6 cage mandatory if it is living indoors?

How do they tolerate heat/cold? I would assume since they are from Africa they shouldn't have a problem with South Florida's climate.

Also are they fairly easy to let roam around your house or is it an animal that you would need to keep enclosed unless it is being watched?

Just wanting to learn more about this creature before I make any decisions. Thanks for the input!!

We have a Small Spotted male. They are adaptable to most climates and if you keep yours indoors under the harshest conditions you should have no problem. We keep ours in a large macaw cage with plenty of branches, toys, a hammack and a hide. He was raised around other animals, including exotics, and gets along with them well. He loves to play and is always looking for mischief. Their only drawback is that they hate to be picked up or restrained and doing this can result in a nip.

If I had to describe their personality/temperament, I would say it's a cross between a ferret and a cat.
