I have a new 10 week old PBP. I dewormed him 5 days ago with Ivomec because he was developing an itchy, bumpy rash all over his body (mostly behind his ears and on his neck) and my book said it was probably mange and he'd need 2 treatments, 14 days apart. It ended up that he WAS infested with roundworms (don't ever want to go through that again!) and those are gone now but the rash is still no better. His skin is flaking off, leaving pink, sore looking skin behind (he's black). His next dose is due in 9 days. Does this rash sound like mange, and if so, is it normal that he would still be so itchy 5 days after his first treatment? If it doesn't sound like mange...any other ideas? He's getting neutered on Wednesday so the vet will be looking at him then, but I'm worried about him and am also wondering if there is anything I can do to help his itch.
Also, Everything I've read about tusks says that they need to be trimmed. My vet wants to remove them while he's being neutered. Is this a normal practice or is there a reason I shouldn't have this done? I've never heard of them being removed, but it sounds like a better idea to me as I've heard that the trimming can be painful - not to mention difficult - sometimes requiring sedation which can be very hard on piggy. Please send advice as his surgery is scheduled in 2 days!
