Hmmm....Fleas....

misterstickabee Dec 09, 2003 10:44 AM

Am i to understand that my ferrets should not have fleas so long as they are healthy? They are healthy as far as teh vet can tell, and seem that way to me, though there is no training to allow me to make that statement based on anything other than observation. My three boys have fleas brought in from the outdoors on my girlfriend's idiot dog. I am rather concerned as they don't really scratch themselves, but the fleas are still there, and when bathing our DEW, we noticed what looked like flea bites. Is there a way to rid our little boys of the fleas? Garlic in the diet seems strange, but i've heard a bit about that. I had thought there was a weaker dosage Advantage type product out there, but my vet said she has heard nothing about it. She also suggested that i tried puppy flea shampoo, but before i do that, i was wondering if anyone would be so kind as to weigh in on the situation as far as experiences, concerns, etc. Thanks in advance.

Ive never had to deal with fleas (stopped vaxing, raw-feeding, and healthy ferrets) despite the fact that my ferrets would be around brush in NH, small parks/sports fields, and other peoples animals. Garlic is an antiparastic? I believe? I put it in the diet occasionally and have not had any parasite problems-then again i havnt dealt with parasites in ANY of my pets. Still a lot of people swear by it to help along with better diet and other care. I know one person whos ferrets got fleas and she used (non-pool) diatomeous (sp???) earth around her house. I have NO idea if she put it on the ferrets, in the cage, in the food, or what. Sorry this wasnt too much of a help =/ have you asked on the naturalferrets@yahoo or rawferrets@yahoo groups?

Hi,
Your in luck. I just got rid of a massive infestation of fleas in which my cat, dog and 2 ferrets were all infected. My vet gave me Revolution for cats for them and told me to use 25ml (ask for a syringe w/o the needle part and suck the medicine from the tube) on them. Do this once a month for 3 months and your flea free.
*ps. Advantage would probably work the same but I'd double-check with your vet before using it.

Using advantage on my ferrets and cats right now, the new girl brought some friends, LOL. Advantage works fine. Get the size for large dogs and use the amount for small cats and kittens, you can get the dosage from the Advantage website, use a syringe without the needle to measure. This is much cheaper than buying the small dosage multiple times.
