Dry skin rash - how to treat it?

Tifa Dec 10, 2003 09:02 PM

My ferret has a rash on his skin, I presume because it is winter here and he has dry skin. It is not his bedding because I have changed it and even bought him new bedding. I have hydrocortizone but I am afraid he will lick it off and get sick. Anyone know how I can stop him from scratching and biting his rash? Thanks

are you sure its just dry skin and not some type of fungal infection? i would be concerned too with the beastie licking medicine off. how often do you bath him/her? if its on a regular basis, then dont. I know a lot of dog people add fish oil to their pets diet and that helps soothe(or something like that..). I give mine fish oil pretty often and we havnt had any dry skin problems. Do you feed her or him ferretone?

ferrets can be pretty prone to dry skin. there's spray-on ferret moisturizer that you just spray on and brush in. i think marshall makes it. it's nontoxic, so it doesn't matter if your guys lick it off. if their skin is extremely dry, though, it burns a little when it first goes on (just like ours).
a humidifier is good for this time of year too. but our boys like to stick their snouts in the hole where the hot steam comes out. it must not hurt much, they shake their heads and go back to it.
