imitator ??s

kyle1745 Oct 11, 2003 05:27 PM

Ok I am still unsure if I have 2 males or a male and a female imitator. I finally got around to getting a film canister up on a suction cup. The larger of the 2 seems to love it, and has been in or around it all day. I plan to put another one up on the other side when I get another suction cup. I do have 2 others on the ground level and all three are at an angle.

1. Should i put any water in the film canisters? I have a very little in there now.

2. Is there any way to tell a female from a male, other than calling?

Thanks for any ideas,

Kyle,
As for the film canisters, you'll just have to experiment and see which angle they like best. I have heard that they prefer the canisters upside down and will lay eggs on the bottom (now top) surface. A little water is ok as well. My vents like the canisters to be at a 45 degree angle with about a half inch or so of water. As for the sexing, I would have to say that if they were both males then one would surely have been 'beaten to death' by now as male imitators are pretty aggresive towards each other. Don't take my word for this, it's just an observation of mine. You may want to try overlapping philo leaves as imitators prefer this as a prime egg laying site (they often lay them on the undersides of leaves).

Thanks, upside down? thats one I have not heard. I might have to beleive you on the male thing though since I started with 3 and the one was a lot smaller, but I really think one of the others killed it. I had them in a small critter keeper and they were all doing great then I woke up one day to find the little one dead. So far they seem to like the one at a 45 degree angle up off the ground. I hope to look for more suction cups tomorrow.

If you get a sec check this out for me:

I am making a link site to offer to newbies, and its just basic for now, but I might make it more. I am still adding links and organizing it all, but its a start.

Thanks for the info,
