Playing with your ferret.

earwiggy Mar 22, 2004 06:26 PM

I do not have a ferret yet, but I was wondering. If I got a big cage for it, or them to play in, would it be OK if for 1 day I didn't take it out. Sometimes I am REALLY busy with homework, and could not take him out that night. I would be able to take him out with me, but not play with him. He/she could run around the room.
Also, If I go on vacation for 2 days would it be OK if I left it in a playpen (maybe designed for babies) for my vacation. I would put everything it needed, but it wouldn't get human attention as often.
How often do you need to change the food, and, litter?
Just realizing, I could put him in the playpen.

Would they be OK in a playpen?

Thank in advance,
Casina

Depending on the size of the cage yes your ferret could play in his cage on occassion but I would not make a habit of it. Even if you are unable to play with your ferret having him out of the cage is better than keeping him in the cage. As far as leaving a your ferret in a playpen I would say definately NOT! They could climb out of it and get into too many things without you being there. You should never leave a ferret alone without someone checking on it. They could spill their water and be without water or toss their food everywhere and then they are out of food. ALWAYS have someone check on your fuzzbutt if you cannot be there. A ferrets litter should be scooped and cleaned completely every week. Their bedding should also be changed and wash weekly. A ferret is not a caged animal and needs to be out of its cage so that it is able to socialize. If you are not going to have the time then please reconsider owning a ferret. A ferret that is left in his cage too much becomes an angry and depressed ferret and that is when biting can start happening.

ditto....it becomes routine after a while but here I scoop litter once a day, clean out cage once a week (wash blankets and hammocks, clean water bottle, etc) i put a fresh bowl of food in each evening. also i do not bathe them on a regular basis (only occasionally if they get into big mess)
