Goliath's Bachelor pad story, and mating questions.

Krackaboy1 May 27, 2003 10:34 PM

Well, I've upgraded Goliath's rubbermaid home from a 17 quart, to a 32 quart. Figured it fits perfect on the shelf, and I have the room, so I figured "why not make him a nice batchelor pad?" Since it's a lot larger, I can now fit a nice sized humid hide, along with his normal dry house that he loves so much. After letting him get used to the place over the past few days, I thought he might enjoy some guests. So, I threw in Ess and Frex, who both seemed very interested in Goliath. Suprised me... if I were a female gecko almost half his size I'd be intimidated. He did his tail waving deal, and both girls were receptive looking. And then I guess they competed for his lovin? I dunno... He backed into his lil dry rock, and both girls followed. I heard some more tail flickering, and then about 15 minutes later, out walks Goliath. Guess he got double teamed or something... He seemed a bit tired, compared to his after mating- wants a pinky now- don't touch him cuz he wants to eat your hand- type mood.

So my questions are-
Do females compete for mates when exposed to one at the same time? Goliath seemed a bit shocked at the two lil ladies, who wouldn't leave him alone untill they (or one, who knows, cuz I wasn't about to stick my face near that cave) were mated with.

Is it a bad thing to introduce two females at a time? I figured in case Goliath was getting a little pushy while I wasn't watching, his mojo would be diluted between the two girls, to stop so much stress.

Would a week be ok for them to stay in? Or is that a little too long on three geckos who are used to solitude?

Thanks!

Are your females large enough to breed??? If the male is double the size of your females I wouldnt risk breeding till the females grew a little more. I wouldnt worry about introducing two females at once though, he shouldnt be stressed. In my experience(from what Ive seen), it seems that females hate to mate and in any case, would avoid mating alltogether if possible. I dont think they would compete for a male.

The double the size comment was exaggerated. He's 77grams I think, after loosing some weight since I got him, and the females are something like 46 and 58... or 68. Not sure, I'm at a friends and don't have my records handy.
