Heya,
Does anyone know of some good healthy snacks I could give my fuzzies? I tried raisins but they don't like them. They seem to love bananas but I heard somewhere that bananas weren't good for them. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Ferrets are carnivores so yes, fruits arent the first choice treat id use. I dont give mine treats really, but have you tried any of the recipies in ferrets for dummies?

I wish I had that book. I've looked for it everywhere. None of the bookstores in my area have it.

Raisins and banana are ok to give small pieces and in small quantities. Cereals that do not contain sugar such as cheerios and kix. Small amounts of smooth peanut butter, but be careful too much will cause diarrhea. Cooked meats, not muchmeat. If you have chicken or turkey one nite then cut some up and offer it to your fuzzbutt. I also use yogies and my guys love them, and totally ferret also makes a treat that is really good.

Here are some recipes from ferrets for dummies;

Bobs Chicken Gravy

1 whole roasting chicken, cut into small pieces (do not remove the skin, fat, bones, or giblets)
1 tablespoon olive oil
1 tablespoon vitamin supplement, such as Ferretone or Linatone
1 cup ferret, or high grade cat kibble
2 tablespoons fine bran, whole oats or metamucil
1 tube Nutri-Cal (use half or quarter tube for insulinoma ferrets)
3 or 4 egg shells
4 tablespoons honey
1 cup fat trimmings (uncooked)

Put on your goggles. Pureee the chicken with the fat, kibble and egg shells. Add water until you make a thin gravy. Remove your goggles. Pour the mix into a pot and cook for 30 minutes or until it has the consistency of cream or thick gravy. Add the rest of the ingredients and mix well. Let the mixtures cool before serving.

TIP-Dip small pieces of bread in the gravy of your ferret doesn't readily acceptthe gravy on its own. He should begin to get used to it this way. You can also use a feeding syringe to introduce the gravy to the fuzzy. Take whats left over and pour the stuff into zipper bags or ice cube trays. Store it in the freezer.

When serving the gravy thawed, add water or pedialyte to get the desired consistency and microwave it until it is warm.

TUI'S CHEWIE

Water
Non flavored gelatin
Chicken or Beef finely chopped
Beef or Chicken bouillon

Dissolve non flavored gelatin in boiling water. (Make a supersaturated solution by adding only enough water to where no more gelatin will disslove; you'll see some bits floating around). Toss in the finely chopped chicken or beef. Add flavor with chicken or beef bouillon. Pour the mixture on to a cookie sheet. Cut it into rectangular shapes when its dry. Place in a cool dehydrator until its rubbery and hardened. You can also also store the small regtangular yummies uncovered in the freezer to freeze dry them a bit.

Sorry I meant lunchmeat.

sarahadele Mar 27, 2004 06:34 AM

O I see,sorry.

I tried lunch meat once...Its suprising that when I tried to give a peice to my ferrets (and to my hedgehogs) neither group of animals, which usually like a lot of foods, even looked at the slice of turkey.

Yea lunchmeat is filled with all kinds of crap that is not even good for us. So I can definately see why your little babies would not want it either.
