Do ferrets need buddies?

sila Apr 18, 2004 05:48 PM

I have a single fixed female ferret and she is 18mnths old. Are ferrets normally social animals like dogs or more solitary like cats? Ferrets are very expensive and I dont really have the money to buy another but if she would be happier with a wrestling buddy I might scrape enough together to get her one.She was originally my sons but he didnt take care of her so I took her over, she is let out most everyday but I cant let her out all the time as we have a very large and naughty cat.She has a huge double cage (actually triple its two rabbitcages and a big ferret cage)that is linked together with one of those metal dryer hoses so room for another ferret is not a problem..Thanks

Ferrets are very social animals, but they do not need a buddy to be completely happy. Some ferrets do not like other ferrets and will never get along with a ferret friend and others will love the company. I had my male for 3 years before I got him a friend and he was happy as can be alone and now he is just as happy with a friend. Just remember that you will have a higher food bill, toy bill, bedding bill, litter bill and vet bills. So if money is tight it might not be a good idea to get another ferret. They are expensive critters if they get sick.

I HIGHLY reccomend more than one. I originally wanted one but then I heard that they play with each other like they cant with a person, so I adopted a pair. Then I saw a cute little guy at ths spca in horrible conditions, so I scraped together ten bucks and got him. Then I wanted an angora so I saved forever and got him. They are a lot chaeper if you adopt which is a good thing to do anyway. 3 of my 4 were adopted and I didnt adopt the last one cause I really wanted an angorra. I will never ever buy a ferret again cause there are so many shelters full of them.
