A second ferret

terrierboy2 May 11, 2004 08:39 AM

Hello all,
As some of you may know, I rescued a ferret, Casper, a few months ago. Well, he's doing great...very active, fun, friendly, healthy, and happy. However, I think he needs some company. I have been in contact with New Rainbow Bridge ferret rescue, and will hopefully be taking Casper for a visit to the facility to pick out a playmate. Any thoughts on adopting a second fuzzy? As I am still rather new to ferrets, I'm always looking for other peoples thoughts and opinions. Also, is there any way to litter train Casper? I have a high cornered litter box in his cage, and I but it in the corner that he uses for his toilet, but he moves it out of the way and refuses to use it. Any ideas? Thanks!

Try drilling a couple of holes in the back at the top, and wiring the pan in so he can't move it. That's what I did for my guys who otherwise just shove it out ofthe way. I tried velcro at first, but they figured that one out really quick.

I think getting a second ferret is a great idea...if you are thinking about maybe one day having a trio. Ferrets bond so closely with one another that when one ferret passes on the remaining ferret can get so depressed that he will stop eating, drinking, playing, etc. So 3 is always a good number, that way there are 2 remaining ferrets and they can comfort one another.

My oldest boy would move the litter boxes out of his way as well and do his business in the corner and I bought some stick on cage clips. They have a really sticky side that attches to the box and then they will clip around the wires of the cage!

Thanks for the advice...I will definately have to try the clip thing with the littler box. Has anyone ever heard of new rainbow bridge rescue? I'm just curious of people's experiences with them. They seem like one of the best rescues in the state of Pennsylvania.

It's been my experience that ferrets do better with a buddy to play and snuggle with. BUT, be careful doing to the shelter. When we took our first fuzzy to a different shelter to pick out his brother, he came home covered with fleas. i guess it's unavoidable with that many ferrets coming and going. and getting fleas out of ferrets' thick fur is not easy. other than that, our shelter experience was 100% positive.

Regarding the litter box, maybe try putting some small, additional dishes of food in the corners they offend in. Ferrets don't want to poop on their food.

Thanks for the advice...I will be trying it!
