To cut right to the chase (I'm tired), my three ferrets have recently begun to lose a lot of hair off their tails. So much has come off that I can see the skin clearly when they fluff up their fur. The skin has light brownish-red splotches on it that appear almost to be pimples without the raised skin. On my Dark-Eyed White a brown tint in noticeable in the fur around the affected area. Is this Tail Apolecia (sp?)? What does it sound like? If anyone else has gone through this, what was the remedy? Taking the boys to a vet is a non-issue, so simply let me know if that is the best course of action and away I go. Thanks.

I've had several ferrets that have had that happen. It's clogged pores...blackheads. Sometimes the skin on the tail will even feel waxy. Wash just their tails 3 or 4 times a week with their shampoo. This usually takes a couple of weeks to start clearing up. Remember to rinse the tail well. None of my ferrets have ever liked taking baths or having even their tails washed, but it has to be done. It's not uncommon to happen. One male I had, I had to get some medicated shampoo from the vet. His regular shampoo just didn't do the trick after 3 wks. The medicated shampoo did work a lot faster.
I've had 2 albinos that had tails that would sometimes turn a little yellowish. This usually happened in summer. Even their body coat may have a yellow tint in places. I've heard this can be from the fat used in their food.
I hope that condition clears up fast! Good luck.
