Friday my Mom called me about a free ferret ad in her paper. I talked to the woman and she knew nothing about ferrets, "they need shots?". I got off work and met her to get this little guy. He's about 5 yrs old, a cinnamon I think (not a lot of fur there), and very skinny. The first few hours at my house all he did was go back and forth between the food bowl & water bottle. He's def adrenal but he also has ulcers. So for now I'm going to treat the ulcers and give him a Lupron shot and melatonin implant and look at doing surgery after the first of the year. He got his first distemper vax before I brought him home and I just got in his ADV test results...he's neg! Yay! So now, once we get the ulcers under control, he can meet the other kids.

Congratulations on the new addition. So how many does that make now?

Charlie makes 9. My all time high is 10. At least I'm still in single digits.

Congradulations! Did you name him Charlie or was that his name already? Poor little guy. I'm sure once he gets some tender loving care he'll feel a lot better.
Have you ever used Lupron before? I know a few from our shelter have, but they haven't been on it long. I know it's not a cure, but can help with the symptoms when surgery is out of the question.
I hope Charlie gets to feeling better fast. I hope you both have a long, happy time together!

I named him, the woman I got him from couldn't remember his name. He's doing so much better already. I'd guess he's gained at least a half pound. He's not grinding his teeth as much either. Hopefully another week on the ulcer meds will have him fixed up in that area.

I have used Lupron before. For the most part I've used it short term like I'm doing with Charlie, to get him healthy enough for surgery. Between the ulcers and malnutrition I don't think he'd survive surgery right now. I did use it long term once with an older girl who wasn't a good surgical candidate. Towards the end it didn't help much with the symptoms, even with a melatonin implant also, but it did make her feel better. When it was about time for her next dose she'd slow down and sleep a lot more. After the shot she'd be dancing around the house. When it became apparent that the Lupron wasn't doing her any good at all anymore I decided to give surgery a shot. At that point she had nothing to lose anyway. Turned out the tumor was malignant. I'm surprised the Lupron helped her as long as it did. It was a really nasty tumor.
