me and my dad are building bubbles a small park in my room, so i was wondering what kind of substrate to use for the bottom (i.e. dirt, sand)

How neat! Personally I'd go with sand but you could use either. Just don't use potting soil if you go with dirt. I'd love to see a pic when it's done.

Sand would be a terrible thing to use.It will cause all sorts of respitory problems.

I know quite a few people who have sandboxes for their ferrets and I've taken mine to the beach several times, all without any adverse effects. Where exactly did you get your information?

I haven't heard of any problems playing in the sand either, but when I think about it, there's a possibility. Mine have dug their noses into it and they would snort and do it again. I suppose this could be an irritant to their lungs if they did inhale it.
I have heard of some people using dry rice or shredded paper, depending on how big the box is.

Oh God, I did shredded paper once for my kids and I was picking up strips of paper for months. LOL I much prefer the cornstarch peanuts. The only thing about paper or peanuts though is that it doesn't address ferrets' innate urge to dig whereas soil and sand do. Look at it this way, ferrets are by nature burrowing animals. Sand is often in the soil. Therefore sand really shouldn't be a problem. I honestly think they have better sense than to inhale it.
