New ferret forums added

phwyvern Feb 06, 2005 12:25 PM

Hello,

If you have not already noticed, there were 3 new ferret subforums added to this general ferret forum.

Ferret Behavior & Training
Ferret Housing & Toys
Ferret Health & Diet

Feel free to check them out. Hopefully the subforums will help people find some specific information when they need it.

I've been in the process of moving some older posts from last year to those forums (posts that had not been scrolled off yet into the archives). I've been randomly moving some of the more obvious posts that fit those subforum topics, however, if you know of any old posts that fit the catagories I may have missed, feel free to let me know.

I have to say I think that is completely unnecessary. This forum is actually quite slow and there is no need to split up the few posts we do get onto multiple boards. I understand that you're trying to improve the site and if there were a busy board it would make sense to do that but it's not.

Have to say I agree with the above post, we go for days on this forum with no new posts, so I don't really think splitting by topic is necessary. If anything, it will probably reduce my usage of the board since I would have to check three places to see if there is anything new now.

It has nothing to do with encouraging more traffic or the slowness of the current forum. No one is being forced to use those subforums or being asked to. The subforums at this point in time simply provide a place to move OLD posts to so that they don't scroll off the board and into the archives as quickly. Once posts are in the archives it can be difficult to find information if you don't know how to word the queries. The subforums are for the time being going to provide organization of existing posts for those folks that want/need to find specific information quickly and don't want to hunt through a single forum containing everything or having to try to peck through the archives. Since most people never bother to go past page 1 it's ideal to move the older posts from page 2, 3, etc. Eventually more people will start to use these forums and the subforums will take on a life of their own, but for now it's a pseudo-archive system.

Also, it is actually pretty easy to search all of the ferret forums. Just use the 'today's post' link and in the lower search box highlight 'ferrets'... the search will search the main ferret forum and all of the subforums attached to it. You can stipulate how far back in time you want to search too... the last time you logged in, 2nd to last time, last 24 hours or any time. Or if you would like to search all of the forums in the critter catagory (or rodent catagory) you can use the upper search box instead of the lower individual forum search box. The search results will bring up any threads that had new posts made to them after the time frame you specified.

There's one thing I would like to bring up. The topics are listed according to the date they were posted. Every time a new topic is posted it is at the top until a newer one comes on. If someone answers a topic that is a ways down on the page, the topic never moves up. These new replies may never be seen by others because they are so far down no one looks there. Is there some way this can be changed so topics are in order by the newest reply? I don't go to a lot of forums, but all the ones I go to have it where the topics with the newest replies are at the top. This way we wouldn't miss any.
Just a thought.

The forums are based on a straight chronological order of the date of the first post in a thread (topic).

If you want to find threads (topics) with new posts you use the 'today's posts' or the 'find new' link and have it search whatever individual forum (or groups of forums) you want for any new posts made since the last time you logged into the forums (or any other time frame you want to go back to). This will give you a list of just those brand new threads or already existing threads that contain new posts based on the time frame you had it go back to. There is no need really to look at the page and try to manually find new posts. But, if you are logged in any new posts should show a blue/red colored 'new' icon tag next to the post subject line based on the time you last logged in, but again you'd still have to scroll down through the page to look for those icons. It's simply easier to run a search using the today's post link....simply easier to just use the search links and pick which forums to search.

Thanks for the explanation. I just never thought of using the 'search' mode.
