Adult Burmese Caging Survey.

cobrafan Oct 11, 2003 06:25 PM

I am thinking of getting a male Burmese and I would just like to ask keepers of adult Burmese's what kind/size of enclosures they keep them in. Also maybe the length/weight of the python as well. I am thinking about using an entire small bedroom but I am not sure if this would work out well. Any information or suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Thank you,Drew.

Well, i can tell you what i'm going to do. I have an extra bedroom in my house that we hardly ever use but instead of giving her the whole room, I'm going to build my own cage to put inside the room. BUT, the cage i want to build will be at least 8x3. Maybe even an 8x4. That is just what i'm going to do, but then again, i just bought her today so i have at least 2 years to think about it.

Just curious, from what materials and how will you design your cage?

Well, my burmese is just a baby now, but the cage i had built for my 9 foot boa was made from plywood and the kitchen countertop sheets. I forgot what they call it but its 4x8 sheets that come in different colors that run around (i think)$40 a sheet so it will get expensive, but it looked nice though. I went to a store yesterday that had this 15 ft male burm in a nice display cage. He wasn't sure of the size but it looked to be a 9x5 little room that was built of plywood and had a little platform that had one of the small koi ponds in it for water. Also included a big ass tree limb that stretched from one end to the other. They painted the walls to make it look a jungle. It was neat.

You don't need an entire room for a burm, however, something in the neighborhood of 8' x 3' will suffice on a permanent basis. Some of the brands I recommend are: Habitat Systems (best of the best), Vision (6' is their largest size but it will work), neodesha, and Freedom Breeder (they now make HUGE racks for big snakes). You can't go wrong with any of these. Rob Carmichael, Director/Curator of the Wildlife Discovery Center
