A question about shedding.

greentea Mar 30, 2005 09:07 PM

Well MeepMoop seems to be doing fine since her accident with the Decon. I was very worried about her.
I do have a question about shedding though. I know ferrets have a springtime shed, but how much hair loss is normal? How long does this typically last? Do they usually lose some guard hairs and some fluffy white undercoat?
She still has a nice thick coat, no bald spots or anything like that. It just seems like a lot of shedding for such a little girl.

My ferrets shed more in the winter and gain more hair in the spring. I guess it's due to the heat and air conditioning. I've scruffed mine allready and came back with literally a "glove" of hair! They lose both types of hair guards and fluff. As long as there are no bald spots dont worry. Just brush and bathe more frequently.

I will usually pluck my ferrets when they start shedding so they don't ingest a lot of hair. I once plucked Kami down to a crew cut. Talk about a funny looking fuzz. Sounds like your baby is having a normal shed. Don't forget to give extra lax.

Where do you people live with all this shedding business?! I went out and bought a little brush just for Puck, I've been watching him like a hawk, and nothing's coming out! Of course, it's still quite chilly here too.

My girls usually start shedding in late April and then again in November. In fact, most of mine have done it around that time. It looks like a ton of hair, but it's normal. Most times I noticed it in their bedding. Before I wash their bedding, I shake it out. And at these times I see a lot of it coming out.

I'm in the deep south so my kids tend to shed a little earlier than most.

Ah. I'm in Northern VA. We like to have freak temperatures. Why just the other day it was in the 70's. Tomorrow it will be in the 40's.
