Got a cage but have questions??

ltldrgn13 May 27, 2005 12:12 PM

I think my son is one step closer to getting a ferret. He finally got a cage, it is in great shape although it is a large (cage size is = 3 feet tall by 3 feet wide by 2 1/2 feet deep) black coated MIDWEST parrot cage with stand. Our nieghbor gave it to him for free. It looks just like all the black wire ferret cages we have seen, except it has one large locking door and two smaller locking doors and it doesn't have any shelves or ramps. Do you think it is ok to use for a ferret?? We would use an additional lock for the doors just to be extra safe a ferret couldn't get out. Any suggestions where to buy shelves and ramps? The thought is to use this one if everyone thinks it will work until he saves up enough money to get the $250 cage he really wants.

Thank you,
Venus

I'm having some trouble picturing it but I had one of those seven story ferret cages and mine rarely went any higher than the second story...of course they got at least 3 hours play time outside the cage every day and most days even more than that...I believe petsmart sells different ramps, etc. for cages...you could even check on the net under ferret supplies and at pet stores you know of (petsmart, petco) on the net...save you some running around looking...

I've never seen the MW birdcage but their cat cage & ferret cage are very similar. My guess is the shelves will fit all the cages and you can get them at just about any store that carries the cages. The ramps attach to the shelves. The only problem I have with the MW cages is that the shelves aren't very wide and they leave a lot of room for a long fall. Make sure your son places hammocks where if the ferret does fall he'll fall onto a hammock and not plummet to the bottom of the cage. I ferret sit for a couple who have a MW and it's great for portability. That's the one big drawback I have with my Martin's cage. They're able to bring their ferret's cage here so he feels more at home when they go out of town.
