flea prevention

mishy Jul 12, 2005 03:28 AM

i dont know about anybody else but i am really paranoid about fleas. i always grew up with cats and dogs and every once in a while we'd have a huge flea outbreak and our whole house would be coverd in fleas, even we were always coverd in fleas. it was absolutly aweful sometimes. though lots of good products have come out and sence we have used them we havnt had any problems. i'm just worried that a flea or 2 or more might be carried in by the dogs somehow and get to my ferrets. does any body use flea shampoo on their ferrets even if there ok just be sure? i would like to do something because id rather be sure we dont get fleas than have another flea outbreak.

If you're going to use flea shampoo use only something made specifically for ferrets and even then stay away from anything made by Hartz. I use Revolution. It controls fleas, heartworms, & mites. I've also used Advantage without any problems. There's a third one, Sentinel I think, that is also safe to use.

You can use that stuff you dab on their backs to prevent fleas but this isn't approved for ferrets and some vets won't sell it to you. It caused some hair loss at application site for our fellas.
It is VERY important to prevent fleas from getting in. Once fleas get into a ferret's dense fur, they go crazy and it is very hard to get them out.

A lot of things we use on our ferrets aren't approved for them and are used off label. Thousands of people have been using Advantage for years. While I have heard of a few bad reactions to Revolution, I've been using it on my ferrets for 3 years without incident.
