Unfair treatment of sick ferret..

platinumtlc Jul 30, 2005 12:39 AM

Hey all, I work at a petstore in NJ, and we have a sick ferret in the back. He has an inflamed anus and he looks like hes been bleeding. They are saying he has hemmoroids. They have been treating it with sugarwater on the anus.
It is bad and it needs to go to the vet, but our manager says we don't have the money for it so we have to send it back to Marshalls to put it to sleep.
That is so wrong and I hate that about my petstore, we don't bring anything to the vet! Their first inclination is to freeze most of our sick reptiles and small animals, because it isnt worth it to bring to the vet.
What should be done?!?! This has to be against the law or something. I was playing with it today and it seemed so happy and playful it would kill me to come in one day and find out they sent it out to be put to sleep, all because we didn't have the money to bring it to the vet.
I'm sure this happens all over america with pet store and its not fair. Is something being done?

You could report your store to the authorities for animal cruelty. I certainly wouldn't continue to work there. That said, the ferret has a prolapse from being fed hard food while too young. Moistening the food will help considerably. Sugar water is a home ready for inflammed hemorroids but pushing them back in then applying Preparation H works much better. Good luck to you and the little one.

I had one that suffered from that...she was given medication by the vet and recovered...I believe that medicine she even liked and would come right to me for it...I would report them to the authorities...if you are in the staes try the humane society...they might deal with it or know who you should contact...even try a web search for places in your area...

It just kills me that there are people out there who own pet stores for profit only, and dont have a single care for the animals themselves, unless they turn them a profit. Why go into the pet business if you dont care about animals? its disgusting. I would make an anonymous call if you fear repercussions from calling it in to the new jersey humane society. i got my ferret from a New Jersey pet store. how do i know that they would have put my baby to sleep if they found out she was ill and they didnt want to care for her?!
Please tell us what happens next!
