I am very new to the ferret world. We are not looking to get ours until we move out of these apartments we are in, and into our new house (where the ferret(s) will have its/thier own room). We havent decided if we are getting one or 2, but most likely will end up getting 2. Might I also add that we are going to rescue them from a shelter, and I am doing as much research I can before we get them. Anyway (sorry, I tend to ramble), what cages, in your own opinions, are best? They are all very expensive Ive noticed, but what exactly are the best, most convenient, safe, etc.? Ive noticed they have ones with the little tubes up top that they can crawl through, like a hampster, and 2 story cages, 3 story, plastic, metal-- WOW!! Theres a lot! Well anyway, any advice would be appriciated!!

I have two of the funnel cages that you refer to, they don't really work out that well. The funnels tend to come apart over the top of the cage and the ferrets didn't use them anyway. I ended up capping the openings on the cage and making a maze on the floor with the tubes. The ferrets love that. Another drawback is the door isn't big enough to get a high-back litter pan through. On a positive note, they breakdown pretty easily for travel.

I also have a Martin's New Englander cage. The doors are much larger so there isn't a problem with litterpans or anything else fitting in but I have found it's difficult to hang hammocks in it. And for some reason some of my ferrets want to poop on the bottom ramp. It's very difficult to clean that area so that cage sits on my back porch right now.

I'm still looking for the perfect cage. I'm not sure it actually exists.

You are in for a treat should you get them. I have had my ferret for 9 months now and never imagined how much fun, love and entertainment he would provide to not only my kids but me.

I got a wire (2 story cage) with a hammock for about $150.00. For bedding upstairs (an old sweat shirt is a favorite b/c he likes to sleep in the arms or a little hideway home within the cage (is also liked).

I used cat litter on the bottom for his litter box (the entire bottom floor as opposed to a litter box within the bottom floor. I have a water bottle (and his food dish) and when I let him run and play I leave his door open (so he can go back in which he does quite a bit to use the bathroom or get some food/water.

Good luck.

Jamie.
