Biting problem

monkeyman53 Jul 10, 2006 02:58 PM

Our 2 ferrets, Baby & Jinx, have fun playing through blankets and we make little obstacles for them. They like to have applesauce and milk. But sometimes when we put them in the blankets and they come out sometimes they bite so if u have any ideas why or how to stop this let mee know.
thanks

Ferrets naturally play relatively rough. Do they nip and back up, or do they bite and hang on? If they are doing a quick nip, they are trying to play or get your attention. You will need to teach them that this is not acceptable to bite you. Try scruffing them and saying a loud "no" when they do it, maybe even trying a time out type punishment. Don't smack them or thump their noses, that will probably make the situation worse. How old are they? Have you had them since they were babies or did you adopt them as adults?

We've had them for about two-three weeks now they nip and back up. We got one at six months old and one was a year old.

They are either playing or asking for attention, then. If they intend to bite out of fear or anger, they latch on and sometimes shake their heads violently from side to side. It will take some time to train them not to bite. You will need to be patient and consistent. Have you ever surfed on www.ferretcentral.org? Try that site for lots of info about ferrets, including some tips for dealing with ferrets who bite. Good luck with the fur babies.
