Ferrets & Parakeets?

phishie Dec 05, 2006 08:59 PM

Hi. I don't have a ferret yet, but I am looking to get one sometime. I have three parakeets already and they will live for a little while, so does anyone know if a ferret would be ok to have with my birds?

As long as the parakeets stay caged and the ferrets don't have access to it, it might be ok. I don't think I'd let my birds loose while the ferrets are loose in the room. Ferrets are carnivores so they have a hunt instinct, I've heard of bad accidents between lizards and ferrets where the lizard didn't have a secure enough cage to keep a ferret out in the past, so I'd be very cautious with this. Ferrets are very good problem solvers and can be little Houdini's when it comes to getting into or out of something at times, so I'd be very careful that the ferret cannot get anywhere near the bird cages.

I guessed I would probably do that if I end up getting a ferret(s). I'm guessing I would also let the ferret(s) out in a space in the apartment where my birds and geckos aren't, and of course watch them while they are out. Thank you for your reply, I've also gotten emails from PHBumble who has been very helpful.
