Making Gerbil's friendly when they are older, is it possible and how??

peachjubilee Sep 24, 2003 12:56 PM

I got two Gerbils when they were just babies but they have always been scared and I haven't been able to hold them. I really want them to like beening handled but it is possible. They are about a year or just over. they are curious when I put my hands in the cage but they run away if I try to pet them. They are sisters, and they are so cute, not the brightest I might add though( lol) but very sweet non the less.

thanks in advance for your help!!

Sure you can tame your gerbils. It really does not matter what their ages are. The key to hand taming is treats. Use sunflower seeds or whatever else they really like. Put your hand inside the cage with the treat on it. They will have to come to your hand if they want it. Talk softly to them while you are doing this. Make sure to do this often, at least once a day. Eventually they will become too curious and sit on your hand and then you can work at bringing them out of their cage. Good luck!
