Dark markings on dove gerbil?

cellodaisy Feb 02, 2004 03:21 PM

I'm pretty sure that my gerbil is dove, but he has these darker markings on top of his head and near his tail that I haven't been able to identify. I'm not breeding or anything, just curious. You can see photos of him at:

Any ideas appreciated. Thanks!

ciao,
Megan

You have a dark patched gerbil which is quite rare to see and noone is sure what exactly causes it. It could be a new gene but so far it seems to show up randomly unless you breed lots of patched gerbils to other patched gerbils. I have only heard of one other gerbil having that marking without being pied. Pied is when they have white on the head, neck and sometimes back. Usually it shows up as a tiny darker colored spot on a pied gerbil.

Basil's markings are cute! The one on the head makes him seem like he is wearing a wig or helmet!

I have a gerbil whose color seem to be dove. But I've observed that she has a darker patch starting from about midway down her body, then ending at about the thigh areas.

I had also been wondering if this was common among dove gerbils.
