We've had a pair of gerbils for over 6 months, from when they were about 6 weeks old. About a month ago, one of the pair started to get bloated during the day but then slimmed back down in the evening. It wasn't an everyday event, just 3-4 times per week. However, in the last week, both gerbils have been experiencing the same problem. While bloated, they just sit around, not really moving or playing or doing much of anything.
They live in a 55 gallon glass tank with a locking top, and have aspen bedding on top of a layer of sand. Once a day we feed them Nutriphase Hamster/Gerbil formula food, and rarely fresh lettuce or raisins.
Any ideas on what could be causing the bloating? It'a always temporary, and their lethargic behavior is of concern.
