Female gerbil biting her own tail.

tryst Mar 10, 2005 06:38 AM

We had two gerbils in together, a male and a female, both over breeding age. We first thought that the male was biting the females tail in a battle for heirarchy but when we seperated them, we found that she is doing it to herself. The tail is almost bitten clean through but I have only known this to happen if the tail is trapped and the animal chews it off to escape.

She will casually wash herself and then launch into an attack on her own tail for no apparent reason which is alarming to watch.

Can anyone shed some light on this as we are concerned and my daughter who owns the gerbil is very upset about it.

Well, whenever an animal does that, its usually having some sort of problem/pain.

Have you ruled out parasites? Anything you are using as a bedding that may be causing her to have an allery, ,extreme dry skin/itchy?

Just some thoughts, I have no idea, but would have to get a good look at her tail under the fur, to see what it looks like.

If you can not find the reason, I suggest you call your vet and ask what could be causing this.

Sorry I don't have a better answer, but it could be many things, something is bothering her to the poit of biting herself, so I'm sure you would like to find her some relief.

Let us know what you find out, may help others, Wish you and her the best!

Take care,
