Hi! I know this forum isn't very active, but I thought I would post on the off chance someone will answer.
I adopted a 2 year old gerbil, Stuart, from the local humane society in July. I haven't had a gerbil since I was a child. I just fell in love with this little guy when I saw him. He was waiting at the shelter for a long time before he was adopted. The volunteers were very excited to process a gerbil adoption!
Anyway, since that time I have been reading whatever I find about gerbils. Several sites on the internet suggest that male gerbils are happier living with at least one same sex companion. So now I am worried that Stuart is lonely. He has gained a little weight. I'm afraid he's getting rounder because he eats out of boredom. What are the chances that I can peacefully introduce him to a young male using the split cage method? Should I attempt it or leave well enough alone? If worse comes to worse, I'd end up with two lone males. Then I'd be worried about both of them!
Thanks.
Kate
