need help!!! tegu sick!!!

mike d Oct 11, 2003 07:13 PM

i brought him to the vet a few days ago and the vet can not find anything wrong. he can find no parasites or anything...

he is very lethargic and has no will to eat and hardly moves.. he has lost alot of wieght..

his temps are good basking between 120-130 and ambeint is 85-90. he has a floresent light and stuff. plenty of hiding spots. and he gets misted every day. he used to eat all of the time but recently he has not been eating as much.

could it be because he never ate crickets?? i have no idea what to do and i hate just sitting here and watching him die...

the only thing ic an think of is possible kidney failure?? but i dont know

Are you sure it isn't that he just wants to hibernate? The way the pic looks he might not be able to find a completely dark as in can't see any light place to sleep/hibernate. Does he come out on his own every day or do you wake him up? How long does he stay out? They usually refuse food for a week or 2 before they hibernate. I don't think there's any reliable way to stop him once he already wants to hibernate.

Are his/her temps falling below 70-75F at night maybe? I know when my Tegu was young he would stop eating when the temp fell too low. Sometimes when all the lights go out it gets a little chilly. Could that be the case here? Just a thought. Best of luck!

no he came out by himself every day for an hour or two ate and went back in his burrow.(that pic is about a month old. he is was on top soil mixed with some cypress mulch) and he has a red heat light on at night to keep his temps up.

when my parents got home from maine today i told them what happend and they didnt even seem to care. to them it was a pet but to me it was part of me that died with him. but at least i have people here who care and i dont even know any of you. thanks again for all of your help when i needed it. i will probably still be poking around here giving help in the ways that i can.

I think you're probably right that it was something like a kidney failure. That just doesn't seem right that he would be eating well then loose his appetite and die so quickly. Your setup sounds right; the temps good, the hiding spots, you took him to the vet you did everything you could for him. I can't even think of anything to suggest you should do differently. I can imagine how you feel knowing you did everything like you were supposed to but it didn't work out like it should have. Sorry to hear that.

Sorry about your loss.

I have 12 tegus most of which are argentines. I had the same problem you did. I had a large male that went of food and didnt do anything but lay around and hide. He wouldnt even hiss at me when I picked him up(which was a routine thing) I took him to my vet and it was kidney failure. He was my first tegu and I lost him about 6 months ago.
