Important question

rsvz00 Jul 16, 2004 08:05 AM

Hi, We bought 5 rabbits at Easter. We have them in an outside hutch with a HUGE fenced in area so they have plenty of room. I noticed one of my females was acting unusual so we seperated her from the others. I converted an old greenhouse into a nursery for her and she kindled four days later. She had 5 perfect babies. This morning, I noticed our male trying to breed with another rabbit which is only 4 months old (we have flemish giants) I didnt think she was old enough to get pregnant. My question is, If she gets pregnant, can I safely put her in with my other female that just kindled? Will the older female harm the younger? Will she harm her own babies or will she harm the younger females babies? If we remove the male from the hutch, can I leave the younger female with the other rabbits to have her babies? Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

I dont know if that whould be a good idea.I make divider cages for my rabbits (12 foot cage with 2X2 cages inside).I also breed rabbits(Gotta love them).Dont put rabbits together in a cage unless you want fighting or breeding..

Its ok if your bunnies are fixed but one is gonna be a glutton and is gonna be overweight...And yes does can become fertile if there a dwarf breed..Larger breeds mature late(6-11 months). And watch that buck!Getting a young doe CAN KILL HER!!!Tell me what breed it is..And I whould let you know when she could become fertile.Remember a nestbox with hay(She'll Build it)

Bye

Thanks for responding. All of my rabbits are flemish giants. I know that they dont mature unill aprox 6 mths old which is why I didnt bother to seperate them but now the male is trying to breed with the 4mth old female. Is it POSSIBLE that he can impregnate her at such a young age?
So its NOT a good idea to place the young female with the older female with kits? Will the older female hurt the younger? Thanks again for responding.

Yes,It is possible. And yes the older doe probally whould hurt the younger doe...(Defending the babies!)

Please never ever hesitate to e-mail me!I love helping people!

Thank you so much. If you had not responded I would have ended up making a huge mistake by putting the two does together. I will probably take you up on your offer to email you anytime as I am new to rabbits and fall into the "lets get bunnies for Easter not knowing how to take care of them" catagory. I am not giving up on them though. We all fell in love with them instantly. Thanks again!
