is $200 too much to spay a rabbit??

kelc Jul 18, 2004 10:12 PM

My rabbit is getting to the age where I believe it may be best for her to be spayed. Just wondering if anyone knows the price for this procedure? I called a local vet today and they quoted me $200, is this reasonable??
If anyone knows how much they or a friend payed to have his or her rabbit spayed or neutered I'd appreciate any input! Thanks!!

That is WAY to much.....Heck I only paid 89.99 for my baby boy and he was already neutered.

Wow thanks! I figured 200 was a little steep...I think I paid that much for both of my cats! ...but I just wanted to make sure, I think I'm going to call a few more clinics and try to get a more reasonable price. Thanks again for the responses

I think it depends on where you live. Where I live this is not uncommon. The local vet here charges $75 for the actual procedure, but when you add in the cost of the pre -procedure bloodwork, as well as the cost of boarding a bunny over night, taxes, etc . . It comes to about $150.

Also, it depends on how many vets in your area will spay a bunny. In my area there is only one "exotic" vet and one other hospital that doesn't speciallize in small animals, but will spay or neuter them. Due to this fact, they can pretty much control the prices as they see fit.

I used to work at the only vet in the city that had a fully stocked hospital. When onther vet clinics had animlas that needed surgery, they had to refer their clients to our hospital. It is still the only vet with 24 hour hospital care.
As a result of this, they controlled the prices. As I recall it cost somewhere in the $400 - $500 to get a dog fixed.

Spaying a rabbit is a pretty invasive procedure. The usual cost for a female to get altered is right around $100 - $200. Although others may be able to find lower prices, most vets charge around that amount.
