Rabbit noises

RodentUnderworld Jul 21, 2004 09:55 PM

I have a rabbit, his name is Dan. He's a rescue animal, that is, he was abused before we had him. he was abandoned in the middle of November (New York state weather). My point of this is, he's very suspicious of humans. It has gotten so he doesn't mind me or my brother too much. I can walk right past him and he doesn't mind much. But if anyone reaches into his cage, he gets ready to bite. Not too hard, but kind of a warning bite. Anyway, if he's really serious about you not being in his cage, he grunts before he bites. It's the only sound i've ever heard Dan make. Does anybody else have a rabbit that grunts? I've only had one other rabbit, and i dont recall her ever grunting.

I had two female rabbits for several years and they would scaffufle around and fight each other in circles and bite each others fur off and make LOTS AND LOTS of grunting. as far as I know it's for intimidation. The bunny that's still alive still grunts if she's REALLY mad at me, but is so well mannered she rarely does.

Theres nothing wrong with your little buddy, he's still just scarred from his previous owner(s).

Thanks. i figured there wasn't anything wrong with him, i just haven't ever heard Dan make any other noises, which I thought was kinda strange, being as my guinea pigs and my prairie dog make all kinds of racket.

My bunny grunts occasionally. Although he has never bitten anyone, nor has he ever indicated that he might bite somebody.

He will grunt when he is irritated about something. His only two sources of irritation seem to be when:

1. I am holding something tasty and i don't give it to him fast enough.

2. If he has just spent the whole morning rearranging his habitat to his liking (ie pulling all the hay out of the hay lofts, or putting food dishes into the litter box etc..), and i then move something, he grunts at me once and then just lets it go.
