Newbie questions!

Ingrid Aug 02, 2004 01:23 PM

Hi everybody,
I just got my first bunny 2 weeks ago, her name is Daisy and she's about 6 months old, or at least that's what they told my husband at the pet store. He picked her out for me because they said she was getting too old to be sold at that store and they would probably have to get rid of her soon....I'm not sure exactly what that means, and I don't want to know !!!

Anyway, she is just the cutest thing. Right now she has a cage in the laundry room. We keep her in the cage when we're sleeping or not home, but otherwise she has the run of the laundry room, with a baby gate closing it off. My questions are about potty training. She picked up on using the litterboxes right away - there's one in her cage and one in the corner of the laundry room. She has been peeing in the litterboxes most of the time, with just a couple little accidents outside of them. She has also been pooping a lot in them too, she'll leave big piles of pills in there...of course we praise her when she does and have been putting hay in the boxes as an incentive too. She leaves random pills around the floor though, and in her cage on her sleeping mat. It's kindof like she'll just be hopping along and little poops will come out without her even realizing it. I also find little dribbles of pee sometimes on the sleeping mat, is that normal? Is leaving the random pills all around the floor something I'm just gonna have to live with, or is there any way I can get her to always poop in the litter boxes? She's not spayed - yet - so I'm wondering if she'll get better after we do that?

Also - just out of curiosity does anybody know what breed she might be? I think her color, from what I've read, is "Opal"?

Thanks so much, glad to be here!
~Ingrid

Congrats on the new bunny. She is very pretty. I wouldn't worry too much about the the occasional pop outside of the litter box. I've heard that some rabbits just do this to mark their territory.

If that is the case, i'm sure she will stop once she gets "settled in."

She looks to be a Mini-Rex, and in regard to the spaying/behavior question, the best time to get her spayed would be around 6-8 months of age, and it will definitely help her behavior.

Glad to have you on the bunny forum ! Shes a BEAUT !
I also would not worry about the little ball balls here and there once in a while. It happens.

She may learn to just jump in the litter box, but I find that when they are resting and then get up, or jumping around, they always leave a few presents !

Thank goodness they are hard and rolly polly!

She does look to be a Rex, such a nice light color! I like her Glad your both here, keep her pics coming!!

Thanks Eve! I just love her so much, and she's becoming quite the little spoiled girl.
It is definitely a good thing their little poos are hard and round....not like when my dog has an accident, lol!

all kinds of lizards, frogs, bunny, fish, so I'm pretty used to all kind of accidents, so to speak.

I would much rather clean hard little BUNNY BALLS, anyday, LOL

Be looking forward to more pics,
