bigdee Aug 14, 2004 07:52 PM

I want to get a rabbit is there anything I can house it in temperarily like a rubbermaid, im not really looking to pay $40 for the rabbit and then like $50 and up for the cage at the same time. Anyone here make their own cage in some way? do you have pics? the rabbit will be for a 4yr old

Hi,
I raise dwarf sized rabbits the netherland dwarfs and jersey woolies. And I make my own cages all wire it is 2X2 and 18 inches high.
Dwarf sized bunnies I dont think whould do good with a four yr old..Maybe a mini rex?
Hope this helps

p.s.This is a example of a wire cage this large cage is for baby rabbits.

why would darf rabbits not be good for a 4yr old? The only rabbits I see in the pet stores are darf and bunnies. Is that cage hard to build? do you use anything on the floor? what are all the things I need to build that cage?

Netherland dwarfs,Brittian Petites and most other breeds have the tendecy to bite..And dont really care to be picked up..lol I know I have scars to prove it!
This is what you'll,need to build a wire cage(Or just buy one)
cage wire
j-clips
j-clip pliers

Alot of pet stores sell dwarf or REALLY young mini rex, because they want bunnies that are small and cute so they will sell.
I have seen some really sweet dwarfs, but also some really high strung ones. Its kind of like the reaction that teacup sized dogs can have with kids sometimes. When an animal is that small, it can easily get defensive.

I didnt know that dawrfs bite. Is there a rabbit sold in pet stores that would be good for a 4yr old girl or maybe guinea pigs?

Thats just my opinion. Even a guinea pig would have to be taken care of mainly by you, as a 4 year old is still very young.

I agree with letting kids touch and help take care of animals at an early age.
** BUT always supervised ! They can get bite, they can hurt the animal, by dropping them or squeezing them to hard, so on and so forth.

But it is also fun to let them name their new friend, help to get water, and to hand feed veggies and treats. Even to help clean, by getting the things you will need for the job.

It can teach them so much. I had a guinea pig very young, and loved them. They squeal when hungry and it was neat hearing them

Where a bunny is a wonderful pet but would be very hard for a 4 year old to hold, a child that young could get really kicked and scratched up trying to pick a bunny up wrong.

Maybe you can get a bunny a few years down the road. After you see how interested and good your child is with a smaller critter.

If you would like to ask more guinea pig questions try the guinea pig forum, they will be glad to help.

And remember, piggies can be hurt, so you will have to be there, also they can nibble a bit, not hard, usually they just want something more to eat

Also they like company, hehehehe, so don't really plan on one, if you are going to do it get 2 piggies.

Good luck, wish you luck in your quest for a pet!
