Basic question about rabbits

tealeth922 Sep 03, 2004 06:18 PM

I was curious as to how much water a rabbit generally is supposed to drink in a day to stay healthy. I'm concerned my rabbit is not drinking enough. I give her fresh water daily, and have even tried putting ice cubes in it, in case perhaps she likes it colder. She's a big bunny & eats a cup of veggies in the morning, and a cup in the evening (this was recommended to me), and I know that veggies are comprised mostly of water, so I'm wondering if it's acceptable for her to drink less water out of her waterbottle if she is eating all the veggies given. Just a little concerned! Thanks for any help!

Rabbits usually despise water bottles. They drink a LOT more water if it's in a bowl instead. Since you mentioned you rabbit likes to rearrange the cage and might tip over a bowl, I suggest you get one that attachs to the cage.

Thank you so much for your input on my questions. I'll try the water bowl attached to the side... we'll see if she'll figure out how to remove that like she did the hay rack (fingers crossed she can't!). Thanks again

Actually, a lot of it depends on the rabbit. Many rabbits handle a water bottle just fine. Mine have to have bottles or they just tip over the dish (or if the dish is too heavy, they splash all the water out). Some rabbits do better with bottles, others with dishes.
