Health Question....

twilightfade212 Jul 21, 2005 12:01 PM

One of my rabbits has been developing puss around her eye (only one). I'm able to wipe it off, and I do everyday, but it continues coming back. Does anybody know what might be causing this or if there are any home remedies or over the counter medications I could use? Thanks a lot.

I would take your bunny to the Vet and have him checked as soon as ya can. Anytime you see pus coming from anywhere on an animal or HUMAN it means INFECTION.

Bunny bacterial infections can spread if untreated to it's respiritory tract or even to his jaw if it is not treated with an antibiotic.

I'm not a Vet, so I do not know what is wrong with your bunny for sure, but sounds like an infection of some kind going on.

I hope he will be okay , and his little eye will feel better soon let us know how he does!

If it is just one eye it could be that something got in the eye and scratched it and caused infection or is still there. I would take him to the vet. They can stain the eye and look for ulcerations and give you some meds. Eye injuries are something I don't mess around with. They can cause lots of discomfort and possibly blindless. Good luck to you and your bun bun. Keep us posted.

Hello!
It is probally either weepy eye(most likley) WEEPY EYE
This is usually a bacterial infection of the eyelids, usually caused by dirt or dust, and is easily treated with antibiotic eyedrops or ointments obtained from your local veterinarian.

ORMYXOMATOSIS
Carried by mosquitos. Cover cages with gauze wire to prevent infection.

The symptoms are a soft swelling in the region around the eyes, base of the ears and sometimes elsewhere on the body. There may be discharge from the eyes and nose. Infected animals should be painlessly destroyed by a veterinary surgeon as recovery is extremely rare.

Any more questions ask me..

How common is this? Mosquitoes are terrible in the area I live. My rabbits are primaraly house rabbits but they do have a large dog kennel they get to hang out in sometimes.

We live in Louisiana and there HORRIBLE here. But I have never had a rabbit get this...It is a 50/50 chance your rabbit can get it..
You should bring it to the vet...Get some antibiotics..If it is weepy eye try this...
CHAMOMILE- Very important herb to have around. It's flower is a famed blood cleanser and pain reducer. It also seems to calm down nervous animals. My family drinks chamomile tea to soothe upset stomachs. The tea can also be used as an eyewash for the occasional weepy eye.

First of all, let me say thanks to everyone here. I never expected so much help from everyone. Well, at first to treat this infection, I would swap away the puss with a Q tip and then irrigate the eye with water with a little epson salt mixed in. That helped a bit. After a little research on the net, I found some helpful information. Here's the site.....

It sounded like my rabbit had sore/weepy eyes. I got a Murine knock off (Murine suggested on the site as treatment). Active ingredients ate 0.5% Polyvinyl alcohol and 0.6% povidone. After about 2 or 3 days of cleaning the eye and applying two drops aftereards, her eyes look all better! Once again, thanks to everyone who helped me out on this.
