Thinking of getting a new bunny

dustbunny Nov 12, 2005 07:41 PM

Hey everyone!

My name is Chelle...I'm not new to keeping rabbits as pets but I haven't had one for a few years. My last rabbit, Nibbles, past away at the ripe old age of 14 a few years ago. Though I missed him, and still do miss him, very much- I didn't feel that it was a good time for me to get another bunny.

Now though, we just moved to a new house and I have been serously thinking about getting a new rabbit. I want something alot smaller then Nibbles was though...he was huge! Also I kept him in a large homemade outdoor hutch, and the new one I am going to keep indoors. I've been looking up alot of kinds of rabbits and I think we want a holland lop...mostly because I want a lop and we read that they're the smallest breed of lop eared rabbits.

Can anyone tell me though, about how big (in inches?) this kind gets? Everything I read only tells me how big they get in pounds.

Also, I would eventually like to keep more then one rabbit, but at this time my bf thinks it best that we just get one. I think I want to get a male if I can. Would it be possable to get other rabbits later on and introduce them or no? That's ok if I can't, I could just keep them seperate. I just don't want the one I get to be lonely or anything, but I have lots of time to pay attention to it if it gets lonely.

Thanks everyone! It's probably going to be a few months still till I get my new baby but I'm already getting so excited!

Wow- 14-that's great. It's hard for me to picture how big in inches a holland lop would be. Stretched out maybe 10 to 11 inches. Not very big. Are you going to keep your new bun in a cage indoors or let them free range? I just ordered a new cage from martins and love it. I would recomend you get your new bun spayed/neutered. It improves their over all tempermant and keeps them from spraying. If you get one from a rescue they are usually already altered. I have introduced quite a few rabbits as adults and have only had problems with one not accepting new comers. You need to take intros slow, and both buns will need to be fixed, but I'm sure it will be ok.

Good luck. Keep us posted!

Thanks for replying! When I get the new bunny I'm going to have a cage for it, but am going to give it free range when I'm home with it. Is there a website for martins so I can take a look at their cages? For my last bunny someone made the cage for me, but I got rid of it because I didn't know if I was going to be getting a new rabbit anytime soon. Does anyone know of any rescues in either MA or NJ that might have holland lops? I want deffinatly look into getting one from a rescue if there was one close enough!

You can try pet finder for rescues. Or the links on the house rabbit society page.

Ohh netherland dwarfs are GREAT rabbits! There small(1-2 1/2 pounds) and there abou 12 inches. All they need is a 24X24 cage.

Plus they have an excellent temperment.Don't belive what you read, about dwarfs having a mean attitude!

Hey thanks for replying! I haven't even really looked into netherland dwarfs because I wanted a lop eared rabbit, but I took a look at the bunnies on your site and they are all very cute! It's nice that they stay so small, even smaller then the Holland lops I was looking at. I'm deffinatly going to research netherland dwarfs now too and see what I think.
