*cries* I have to vent

zoolady Apr 19, 2006 11:40 PM

Just had to vent. I am heartbroken tonight. It is 11:30pm. I jsut walked out on my back porch and saw something laying on it. At first I thought the cats got into my guinea pig cage and stole a baby. But it didnt have fur yet..well not much but some fuzz. And guinea pigs are fully furred and eyes open. So on closer examination I found it was a baby bunny. Eyes still closed. Just barely getting fur. It was all torn to shreds with cat scratches and teeth marks. I assume the mother cat brought it for her kittens as a play toy or learning tool.. I thought it was dead. It was so bashed up and freezing cold. But when I pet down its body it moved.... I freaked out and picked it up and brought it in. Tried cleaning its wounds best I could without agonizing it anymore than it already was and warmed it up. I now have it on a heat pad. But I dontthink it will make it through the night. It's breathing is slow and heavy. It is badly torn up. so many little kitten bites. But the main concern is the skin by his eye is ripped clean open and a huge scratch on his belly. And some missing skin on the top of his head. It would take a miracle for this guy to live... I at least hope I can give him a warm more comfortable place to pass on. I can't look at him much. I check on him every 10 minutes..but it just breaks my heart to look at him long.
Well...just had to vent.. I'll let you know if he makes it...

*cries* It died. Obviously had internal bleeding in its belly. Belly got bloated fast. At least he died warm and not being shredded. I'm still so heart broke.

Oh I'm so sorry! That's so sad!!!

It doesn't sound like there was much you could have done for it though. A baby that young would have been very difficult to hand rear even if it had survived it's horrific wounds. Cat bites are often deadly especially to small animals not only because of the actual physical damage they cause, but also because cat bites often deposit germs deep into the wound. Usually at least 50% of cat bites become infected. Just one of the reasons why I think if your going to own a cat, you should keep it indoors.

If you ever find an animal injured by a cat especially the best thing to do for it is to take it to a vet or wildlife center, because chances are even if it does survive the initial bite wounds, they will probably get infected and need medication.

I'm very sorry you had to go through all that! I know if it were me I would have been so upset about it! At least you did what you could and kept the little guy(girl?) as comfortable as possable. Better to pass on being warm safe then outside on the cold ground.

Thats always a very sad and disturbing site. I have found tiny baby bunnies biten up and bloody many times and even taken them out of cats mouths that were lurking near my yard. Most of the time I believe they die from SHOCK as well of course as their horrible wounds. But FEAR/shock seems to overwelm the sweet little furries.

I'm real sorry Zoolady, such a shame. But as you said sometimes all we can do is make sure they go as comfortably as posssible after the fact

Hope ya feel better soon.
