Hmm what kind of information are you looking for, exactly??

I'll try my best to give you some general information about both, since I don't really know what you want to know.

Rex rabbits are known for their plush-like fur, and it was because of their fur Rexes were the origenal "Velveteen Rabbit". So called standard rex's are a medium sized rabbit, usually between 7 and 9 pounds. They come in about 15 diffrent colors. Their soft fur is due to a genetic mutation that results in very short gaurd hairs, so that the downy undercoat grows over the guard hairs and makes them softer then other rabbits. There are also mini rex's, which are smaller then the standard and usually weigh only about 4 or 5 pounds.

Now on to lops!

Lops and rex's would need pretty much the same care. Their fur would not be as soft as the rex's, but they would still be soft. There are several breeds of lop eared rabbits that vairy mostly in size, the smallest of which is the holland lop. Holland lops weight less then four pounds. The dwarf lop usually weights about 4 pounds, the miniture lop usually weights four to six pounds, both the german and meissner lop weight around 6 to 8 pounds, the english lop usually weights around 9 pounds, and the french lop usually weights over 12 pounds.

So pretty much, if you were trying to decide between these two types of rabbits, first decide if you would rather have a nice soft rex rabbit or a cute lop eared one. After that, decide what size range your looking for. Remember if your going to get a rabbit, look in shelters first! I've seen beatiful rex and loped eared rabbits in shelters!

I adopted a rex and a lop from the pound here in Reno, NV. I pick them up today, they had to get nuetered. I owned a rex years ago and I know how the science of animal care changes so quickly sometimes. I would like to know anything anyone can tell me. What would be the best bedding to use for their cages and litter boxes, other than carefresh. Do rex rabbits shed? Do you know of any good web sites about rex and lops? Thank you very much.

Aww congrats on your new bunnys! Great job getting them from the pound and not a pet store!

For my rabbit's cage I just use old towels. He's litterbox trained so doesn't go to the bathroom on the towels and I can just wash them when they get dirty. You can use lots of diffrent things though. Some people say carefresh works the best controling oders but I've never used it personally, and have no problems with oders as long as I clean the cage often enough. Some people use things like aspen shavings (not pine), newspaper, straw, ground corncob...you get the idea. In the litter box you could use any of those as well. I use newspaper with timathy hay on top since rabbits like to have a snack while they do their buisness.

This site is pretty helpful for care information...

Thank you. My new kids are doing well. THey are both very sweet and love to cuddle. They aren't scared of my other animals either. I'll check in on the forum often. Thanks again

Congrats!! It sounds like they're loving their new home! That's great that they get along with your other pets. You should post some pictures sometime, I'd love to see them! What are they're names?

FreedomDove Nov 17, 2006 10:12 AM

They came with their names. The lop is Midget and the rex is Bugs. They are so cute. Bugs is pretty mellow and loves to cuddle. Midget is pretty active and plays with all her toys and loves to dig and push the bedding from one side of the cage to the other all day long. I can through her toys at her and she will jump up and hit them with her front feet. They still "love" each other all the time. They groom and cuddle with each other often. Do you know of something thats better then wood for them to keep their teeth down? Pumice stone or maybe a cuddle bone? Thanks
