New and in need of advice!

iluvmybun Apr 18, 2007 07:28 PM

Hi everyone! I'm new to this site, and I'm also new to having a bunny! I have a Holland Lop. Not yet sure whether I have a male or female yet, the vet will let me know next week. Anyway, my concern is this: Pete (hoping he's a he) is only about 6 months old. I've heard to feed them veggies and timothy hay and pellets. Then I've heard when they're babies they can only have alfalfa hay and pellets. Here's the thing. He's been getting only alfalfa hay and pellets til now. Well he's been leaving huge chunks of those cecal things. Like all stuck together. Now I'm freaked. I started giving him new pellets so that may be the cause, but I don't know what he should be getting!? I need help!!

Also, he hides under the bed all the time and I feel like he should want to run around in play more. But NO, just hides under the bed. Is he maybe sick??

hi there
I have had all sorts of bunnies, but I dont know there proper breeds, I just keep them in the house, One at a time and love them. did you know that bunnies are nocturnal. that means they sleep durring the day. (mostly) I have a minnie lop. His name is
Bobby. He runs around in my bedroom all the time and when we go out to the yard with my lab/ shepard dog, Bobby goes on his leash and he goes out too. Bobby is house trained and loves to eat apples. He wass so small he fit in the palm of my hand when I got hem over a year ago. I sat him down next to my dog and she pulled him in and started cuddeling him, they have ben inseperable sence. Rabbits are very smart, I dont think they will eat any thing that is not good for them.
when I go to bed at night, Bobby runs around for a little while
then he gets up onto my pillow and lays down for me to pet him while we watch tv. He likes me to massage his cheeks and rub his long ears. I goi to the pet coop and get a big bag of orchard grass for the bottome of his cage and for his litter box, it only cost 1 dollar and fifty cents a week that way instead of going to the grocery store or pet store fo rthe little bags of timothy hay that cost any where from 4 to 7 dollars for a small amount.
did you know that wood chips can cause kidney damage and shorten the life span of your little bunny?
Well I have rambled on enough, I hope I have helped you some, enjoy pete and give him lots of love... Stormy762

Was the rabbit fully weaned. If they are not fully weaned then their digestive tract doesnt work properly and causes what you are finding. You can try and give him goats milk it can help with digestion. At six month you should be able to tell if it is male or female. Actually this can be done much earlier. You can do it your self by vent sexing it. If you look a boy with have a little protrusion with a dot for a hole as a female will have a slit. Good Luck!!
