How Often to clean out a rabbits cage?

Turtlestork Jul 26, 2007 10:06 AM

Hello,

My brother recently acquired a dwarf rabbit(not sure what kind, will determine that later) and she(we are sure) is liveing quite happily. She lives in a larger cage and is let out pretty much every day. This is my borthers second pet, and the first was a hamster. We did such a large step up because he took such good care of the hamster. The thing is we cleaned out the hamsters cage every week, bedding and all, and she wasn't litter trained. Peanut, our rabbit, is, and we have been cleaning out her cage every 2 weeks because she doesn't pee as often in the bedding. How much do you guys totally clean out the bedding in a cage?

And another thing. She pees and poop so much that we have to totally empty out the litter box, litter and all, every day. do you guys have to do this with your litter trained rabbits? the litter we use is these absorbing pearls that you can't sift through. Is there any kind of rabbit litter you can sift through to get the poop out? We sort of feel bad that she has to have all that poop in there with her all the time and if it was siftable we could clean out the poop more than just once a day. Also, is it normal for rabbits to also poop or pee outside the litterbox, like in their favorite place to rest?

Sorry for all the questions, and thanks for listening.

My nikki is Litter Box Trained, I use a product called Sweat scoop for my bedding it's kinda like the clumping cat litter so you can sift through it. it is made out of Wheat. Good luck!!

Hey

I don't keep bedding in my rabbits cage because he would just get it all over the place if I did. Instead of bedding he has a gaint dog bed in his cage, and I wash it once a week.

Zeus, my rabbit, is litter box trained too and I clean out his litter box every day. I tried cleaning it only every other day but there would be so much pee/poo in it that it would make the bottoms of his feet dirty, so I went back to cleaning it everyday.

I'm not sure, but I think I heard that cat litter is bad to use for rabbits because it's not good for them if they eat some. I just use old newspaper in Zeus's litterbox.

It's normal for rabbits to pick a place outside the cage to go to the bathroom as well. Usually they'll pick one or two places in the room to use as a 'litter box'. What I did with Zeus was after he has picked his spot outside his cage, I put a second litter box there so I wouldn't have to worry about him going to the bathroom on the floor.
