Rabbits dying

cherrycowgirl Nov 14, 2007 08:30 AM

I am having a very big and sad problem. I run a rabbit rescue and generally rehome rabbits that have been surrendered to me upon checking their health. I personally have 16 rabbits of my own. Rather I have 1 and my daughter has 15 which she shows. They are giant breeds - checkered giants, flemish etc.. Yesterday I came home and one of my boys was lying in his hutch. He was dead. I was very sad and he was only a year and a half old. There were no signs of sickness at all. No poison, weird foods, nothing to explain it. This morning I went out and another was dead. She was four and also no signs of sickness. There is no way for anyone to get into where they live. There are no wounds. No signs - they were both fine yesterday and she was fine last night. I am dreading going home today. There housing is clean, they eat pellets, veggies hay and plenty of water. It has not been cold and these rabbits are used to being out. When it does get cold I do bring them in and there houses are insulted and they have heaters when needed. Like I said I have seen no symptoms and I am out with them several times a day. Does anyone have any input on what may be happening. I am going to bring my gig boy (GLITTER) into the vet today to see if they can trace anything. I have had him for 7 years and cannot imagine losing him. If you would like to see pictures of him as a baby he is listed in the pictures on this sight listed under GLITTER or GLITTER AND VALENTINE. Please any information would be helpful. We also have ducks and chickens and they are doing fine.

I just wanted to give you an update. We did have another rabbit die yesterday. My big guy checked out fine at the vet. I brought him in to se if it was a possible disease. Last night about 6 my puppy started vomiting. 30 times in fact. I took her to an emergency clinic and it seems she was poisoned. They think it was Drano. Which would be a clear liquid that would be unnoticed. The dog is always supervised outside but licks the grass. We have one kookier neighbor boy that has some problems and the police are looking into it. All of the rabbits and ducks are locked up right now and my husband is cleaning everything out. A horrible thing but at least I have an answer now.

Thank you!

I'm so very sorry about your bunnies dying very sad indeed. It could be so many things, so hard to say.

BUT... I think you are right in having a vet look at the first male (your Glitter) and see if they can find a reason behind the sudden deaths. Since you have so many other bunnies this is really important to do, asap.

Since I'm answering this post much later than you posted, maybe you have some updates for us. I hope everything is okay and the rest of your rabbits are healthy. Please let us know.

There are virus's out there that can kill rabbits, quite deadly, and seems to be no symptoms, just mysterious death occurs.
I have left a link, I sure hope this was not the case, but as scarey as it is I found it helpful to read and understand, and KNOW about this and that it says it's better to house your rabbits indoors!

It turns out my dog got very sick as well. I took her to the vet and they think there was a poisoning something like drano which wouldnt be noticed. We have a new 17 year old neighbor who has some problems. It was reported to the police and so far we havent had any other problems. All of the rabbits, ducks, chickens, ans such have been vet checked and they are all in good health. Thank you for your response!

Geesh that is horrible that someone would do such a thing to little animals, very sad, I'm glad your dogie is okay, damn that would make me NUTS if a weird neighbor did that to my dog / bunnies.

Keep an eye out for that person, I would get a few more dogs, BIG ones, that BITE, lol, take care.
