New Dwarf Hampsters..What Gender?

Salt&Pepper May 06, 2003 04:39 PM

Hi everyone, I'm new here. I just got two new dwarf hampsters, and I was wondering how to tell what sex they are. They are both about 6 weeks old. I was looking for links and/or pictures. Any help would be greatly appriciated! Thanks much in advance.
Love Always,
~Salt&Pepper~
P.S. The name is the names of my new hampsters

If they're female they will have 2 little holes very close together almost looking as one, males will have them slightly further apart.

Where will the holes be? On the underside I'm assuming?
Thank you!!

Yes in the obvious place the holes are it's genitals.

I looked, but their fur is all in the way...Plus, they don't like me holding them upside down (well on their backs) AT ALL.

Hey there. I don't know about anyone else, but I found it extremely difficult to seperate my hamsters by gender-- they're so furry! I have 24 hamsters so it took experience. I dug up some links, hopefully they're helpful.

Thank you so so much! Every reply has helped, esspecially the pictures. I have two males, and they have been kept together since birth, and they are inseperable. They are DEFFINITLY males, but when I seperate them, they always try to get back to each other. They also sleep by each other.
So really it's not true that two males shouldn't be kept together. Again, thank you

So glad it helped! Sounds like you have a cute little set of siblings. I hope they continue to get along. My first two males decided to hate each other all of a sudden after moving in to my home for a few months and I had to seperate them. But I also have a couple of pairs of brothers who sleep together and take care of each other. My greetings to Salt and Pepper! :D

Where did you hear that? That is definately not true. Male Dwarf hamsters can live together fine, I've done it myself plenty of times and so have many breeders I know.

Salt and Pepper say hi And thanks again! Also, I read on a bunch of posts and a bunch of sites that two males shouldn't be kept together. Well, I have their cage that I put them in when I clean their regular cage, so if I have to separate them I can Also, another question (sorry there's so many), they are twins, I mean there is no way to tell them apart...so I was wondering if there is anything I can do to them to be able to tell them apart? My mom and I were thinking maybe taking a toothpick and dabbing a small dot of food coloring on one of their backs?? Maybe that could help? And would that hurt them? Thanks again in advance!

Can I ask which sites these are that have said you can't keep 2 male dwarves together because they're definately giving out the wrong info to people. Are you sure they weren't talking about Syrian Hamsters?

Salt&Pepper May 10, 2003 01:42 PM

Weird, I could have swore that I read that on numourus sites. Maybe I misunderstood, because I did go check some sites and none of them said that. I'm sorry, I must have misunderstood, but if I do in fact find a site that says that while searching, I'll post it okay

Wow, this thread is getting messy! LOL

About being able to seperate the two... I know food coloring is generally non-toxic (or else we can't eat it, huh? Hehehe!), but the thing is, they clean themselves regularly, so eventually they'll probably lick it all out and you won't know who they are anymore.

Mmm... generally as they grow up, you'll be able to see a size difference, or a slight difference in color. Or if that doesn't even happen, they may have different personalities so that would help. If you really want to attach their names to them, you could probably wait until they're a bit bigger. I'm willing to bet that one will be noticeably bigger (to you anyway, since you watch after them).

And don't worry about the questions-- it's always a good thing to know more about your furry friends, right?
