Temperments of dwarf hamsters and caging

Tor_de_Fartz May 18, 2003 03:39 PM

I've been considering getting a dwarf hamster. Which species is the most docile and do you identify it?

My other questions:

1. How many of these little guys can you keep in a ten gallon tank?

2. What is the minimum cage size for these hamsters? Could I keep a single hamster in a 4.5-5.5 gallon Critter Keeper or glass tank?

It seems to be a popular opinion that Roborovski hamsters are the most docile. They're the smallest, it's said. I have Campbells which I've raised since they were born-- they don't bite.

This site has some descriptions of the different dwarfs available in stores:

Ten gallons is kinda small, so personally I wouldn't recommend one that size. There's also the issue of ventilation-- there is ammonia in their urine, and the fumes hang low, so your hamster would be walking around breathing it.

However, this site doesn't seem to think a ten-gallon is too small. You might want to do some research.

Hope this helps!
