Babies and cages

car96 May 28, 2003 11:46 AM

My hamster is due to give birth soon and I was wondering if it would be better to put her in a cage with a solid bottom or leave her in her cage that has a wire bottom. I am worried that the babies will get stuck in the wire floor if the get out of the nest.
Thanks for the help

it is a good idea to switch. In my openion they should not be kept in wire cages at all, that's for birds, it's just uncomfortable for them. I keep mine in clear plastic containers from The Container Store, they work great. I just drill lots of large air holes in the sides and on the lid. The holes are big enough for them to stick out their noses but not enough so they can start chewing at them. I also drill holes to install wheels and water bottles. The containers also make cleaning a snatp, just take the hamsters out and dump out the dirty substrate and use some water to wash it. Switching to this kind of cage would definately give them a more secure environment to live on. If you want to see pics of my cages let me know. Hope this helps.
