Dog or cat biscuits for dwarf hamsters?

akirton Jun 03, 2003 09:52 AM

Hi there, I have heard that you can give dwarf hamsters dog biscuits to eat. I was wondering if this means all dog biscuits and maybe all cat biscuits too? Especially with cat biscuits, I have noticed there are like tuna ones, or beef/chicken ones etc. I don't know if these are safe/healthy for the hamsters?

Also if it is possible for hamsters to eat these biscuits (or some of them), any tips for good ones that will be healthy for the hamsters? I find that hamster mixes that I can buy are overloaded with sunflower and pumpkin seeds, which I think make my hamster grow too fat. So I was wondering if eating biscuits might be better for it. Unfortunately these mixes have only a small percentage of biscuits, and my hamster do love the bicuits also.

Any advice appreciated!

Well, you can feed them 7 % fat dog food, too, and would only give them dog biscuits occasionally for treat and something for them to knaw on. Cat food and biscuits are too high in fat. I wouldn't recommend giving it to them. Too much fat can give them tumor. Plus, I think cat food have something in them that dog food doesn't have--I think ashes or something.

Dog biscuits is what you should stick to rather than cat biscuits. Also, the biscuits would be 'treats' only and should never be considered as part of the bulk of the diet. Stick to the hard crunchy biscuits that are primarily vegetarian/organic natured types and stay away from the chewy stuff or the meat based stuff like the snausages, and beggin strips and such...icky stuff.

My favorites that I use for my rodent critters is:

Hagen Nutrience Dog Treat w/carrots
Hagen Nutrience Dog Treat w/grapes
Hagen Nutrience Dog Treat w/apple & honey

Old Mother Hubbard biscuits (the variety pack and the peanut butter flavors)

Exclusively Dog Cookies "Best Buddy Bits" peanut butter flavor
Exclusively Dog Cookies "Best Buddy Bits" carob chip flavor
Exclusively Dog Cookies "Best Buddy Bits" chicken flavor

Old Mother Hubbard will probably be the easiest brand for you to find compared to the other two as it's more nationally known. Even I have problems finding the other two brands and only one store really carries them where I am at...I ususally buy out all they have when they do have that stuff in lol.
